The Sussex coast and countryside is packed with historic sites and battlefields from the invading Romans to the Normans leaving behind palaces, battlefields and castles.   Sussex is full of historic houses, art galleries and gardens giving every you the opportunity to see some of Britain’s most interesting history during your holiday in Sussex.

1066 country

Visit the site of England’s most famous battle, the battle of Hastings between King Harold and William the Conqueror.  This battle was the last time that the British Isles were successfully invaded and the imaginative exhibition brings alive this dramatic story and the impact it had on English history.  Also explore the Abbey which was constructed by William the Conqueror at the request of the pope as penance for the bloodshed.

This ancient castle, built at the end of the 11th century, has been the home of the Dukes of Norfolk and their ancestors for over 900 years.  The castle contains a priceless collection of art, tapestries , armour and furniture.  The castle is set on a hill with 40 acres of gardens overlooks the beautiful town of Arundel with its historic abbey and is arguably one of the finest castles in the country.

Fishbourne Roman Palace

The Fishbourne Roman Palace is the largest collection of mosaics that have survived in situ in the country and was part of a lavish Roman Palace dating back to the 1st century.  The exhibition described the luxury enjoyed by its Roman occupants as well as the workmanship and innovation of the palace.  Outside the palace are recreated Roman gardens to explore.  There are a number of events held during the year including a number of interactive activities.

Herstmonceux is renowned for its magnificent moated castle, set in beautiful parkland and superb Elizabethan gardens. Built originally as a country home in the mid- 15th - century, Herstmonceux Castle embodies the history of Medieval England and the romance of Renaissance Europe.

Petworth House

Petworth house is a magnificent 17th century mansion housing one of the National Trust’s finest collection of art with works by Turner, Van Dyck and Blake.  Also within the house is a fascinating look at the service quarters of the 17th century mansion and surrounding Petworth House is a 700 acre deer park.

Royal Pavilion

The Royal Pavilion, with its Taj Mahal architecture is the stunning seaside retreat of the Price Regent (later King George IV).  The castle was later used by King William IV and Queen Victoria but has been restored to its original splendour with its Chinese inspired interior.  The palace is full of exquisite art, furniture and decorative pieces set in magnificent rooms such as the banqueting room with its opulent chandeliers.
