Walking & Cycling around Sussex

Sussex has a large number of walking trails across the entire county including the South Downs Way which stretches across the entire county and provides an opportunity to see the best of the Sussex countryside.   Sussex is also a wonderful county for cyclists to explore with a great network of quiet roads and country lanes.  There are plenty of flat routes along the coast and more challenging routes inland across and around the South Downs.

South Downs Way

The South Downs way is a 100 mile long National Trail for cyclists and horse riders as well as walkers and stretches from Eastbourne to Winchester, following the line of ancient tracks across the ridges and river valleys of the South Downs. It has spectacular views north over the Weald and south to the English Channel, and takes you past Saxon churches, Iron Age hillforts, old windmills, Georgian manors and pretty villages.

The Monarchs Way

The Monarch's Way is one of the great long distance walking and riding routes in England, wandering all the way from Worcester to Shoreham and tracing the path of the fleeing Prince Charles in 1651.  In West Sussex the Monarch's Way passes from Stansted Park along the Downs to Steyning, and then descends to Brighton and, ultimately, Shoreham-by-Sea.

The Downs Link

The Downs Link is a 37 mile long footpath and bridleway which links the North Downs Way in Surrey to the South Downs Way in Sussex. The Downs Link Path runs from Botolphs near Steyning to Guildford and provides relatively flat and very enjoyable walking and cycling.

High Weald Landscape Trail

The High Weald trail runs from Horsham to Rye on the coast, and crosses the High Weald Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty, passing the distinctive sandstone villages of West Sussex and the white weatherboarded villages of the East Sussex
